Nexcelle marks new program milestones

The biennial Paris Air Show always is an important aerospace industry gathering, and this year’s event was especially well-timed for Nexcelle – being held as we deliver nacelles for the no. 1 flight test aircraft on both programs in which our joint venture is a supplier: COMAC’s C919 jetliner, and the Bombardier Global 7000/Global 8000 business jets.
For the two CFM International LEAP-1Cs that will equip the first C919, the podding process with our nacelle system and the engines is now underway, enabling the two powerplants to undergo their calibration runs and final checkout before being shipped to Shanghai.
The LEAP-1C incorporates an electrically-operated O-Duct thrust reverser, which is a unique feature of this nacelle system – resulting in improved engine flowpath and reduced fuel consumption, along with increased thrust reverser efficiency and facilitated maintenance. In addition, the nacelle benefits from the extensive application of composite materials and acoustic treatment, while incorporating an advanced inlet configuration that includes an innovative anti-ice system.
Nexcelle is busy as well in its responsibilities on the GE Aviation Passport engine, with nacelle elements also being delivered for the pair of powerplants to equip the first of Bombardier’s new-generation business jets – a Global 7000.
Key features of Nexcelle’s nacelle system for this aircraft application include an innovative anti-ice system with a directed flow nozzle concept, and a 360-degree single-piece extended composite inner barrel incorporating advanced acoustic protection for lower engine noise levels. The clamshell composite fan cowl on this nacelle is designed for improved maintenance and reduced system weight, and the target-type thrust reverser with a fixed nozzle provides lower weight while retaining reverse thrust efficiency.
During my Paris Air Show meetings with aerospace industry colleagues and the news media, I underscored the dedication of Nexcelle’s teams from our two parent companies – Aircelle of the Safran Group, and GE Aviation’s Middle River Aircraft Systems – in reaching the important hardware delivery milestones for both of these nacelle system programs.
The same spirit will continue for Nexcelle’s support of the C919 and Global 7000 flight tests, and is to be maintained through certification and beyond as our nacelle systems enter service with operators around the world.
